COMPUTING IN REAL TIME - DESKTOP ENVIRONMENT
BOOTING
Booting refers to the process or series of process that the computer system undergoes, when it is turned on. The question is how do you switch on the computer?!. Well its pretty easy, all you have to do is push a button – the power button! It is usually located on the upper left corner on laptops , but at times you just have to look for it, in PCs you have to push the power button on the system unit ( a rectangular shaped box connected to the monitor ) . So once you see this button all you have to do is push it once , don't hold it down just press on it once and the strange look tv screen should begin to come to life from there. You should see a black screen appear and start displaying some strings of letters as shown above. Don't fret!, its all good so just let the computer finish its start-up process fully, and welcome you .. endeavor not to hit any button on the keyboard while it boots. After booting, you should be redirected to the Desktop Environment / home-screen ….....Adventure Begins from here!
NOTE: DURING BOOTING THE COMPUTER UNDERGOES ABOUT 12 ALL COORDINATED BY THE OS......
DESKTOP ENVIRONMENT
The desktop environment is what comes up after the system successfully starts-up or finishes the booting process. The desktop environment is simply a display window or page that displays icons or in other words links to programs and files on the computer system.
Think of it like the home screen your smartphone , it displays some apps that are installed on your phone but not all right?, and when you tap on any app on the home screen, it automatically opens up the app right?. Well that's all the desktop environment does too ( well most of it). The desktop environment consists of Icons that carry information about programs and also about some important parameters like : battery percentage, internet connection state, volume..etc. A typical example of a desktop environment page is shown above.
⦁ ICONS:
The tiny box photos you see on the desktop environment are what's known as icons, and they are actually links or shortcut buttons to programs or files on the computer system . This means that when you activate a icon (by double clicking {left mouse button} on it) , it takes you to the program or file it is linked to . Just as you tap on an icon on the home screen of your phone to open up an app, in the same way the computer icons take you straight to the program or file it is linked with.
⦁ TASK BAR:
The task bar is the part of the the homepage (desktop environment), that displays some applications or programs on the bottom part of the desktop environment page . The task bar just like the rest of the screen contains icons , but it also allows for quicker access to the programs on it , this way one only has to click on the icon once to initiate the program rather than double click – unlike the other icons .
NOTE:Double clicking on icons on the task bar would rather initiate the program twice rather than once!
